WELSH FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES ANOTHER IMPROVEMENT
17/04/2008

Welsh Football editor Dave Collins announces in issue 125 the latest significant development in the magazine's format:

"If you’ve been a regular reader over the years, you will know we have tried to find ways to develop the format of the magazine without straying beyond our budget. Introducing the up-to-date tables supplement was one innovation, and then we managed to add full-colour photographs on the front cover and the two centre pages.

For the last year or two I have been hoping the budget would stretch to allow more pages of colour photos, but despite attempts to raise circulation numbers to cover the extra cost, it has always looked like a risk too far, and only end-of-season editions have been enhanced with more colour pages. Raising the cover price to fund more colour was an option I had been considering, but one I have been reluctant to take.

However, I am very pleased to announce that we have found a way round this problem – which means that from this issue onwards EVERY issue of Welsh Football will have four extra inside pages with full-colour reproduction. I am sure everyone will immediately recognise what a difference this will make to the appearance and impact of the magazine. Many club features, for instance, will be able to include colour shots of grounds and players – look at the Newport YMCA and Bryntirion features in this edition, plus the ‘Visit to’ articles on the centre pages, to see how much better they look with colour reproduction. And, at least at this stage, it won’t cost you a penny more. I really must pay tribute to Harris Printers of Porthcawl for coming up with an imaginative pricing approach that enables us to take this step without making it too much of a financial gamble.

On a more general note, I can say that the magazine’s circulation numbers are holding up reasonably well (thank you to all regulars) and we seem likely to have broken even again on the season, although until sales numbers and revenues come in from distributors, this is only a forecast. But we do need to achieve at least a modest increase in sales next season to cover the extra costs both of the extra colour and another postage increase in April, and if anyone has ideas on how we can sell a few more copies, (or raise income some other way!) please get in touch. I hope the improved format will make the magazine easier to sell – why not tell your friends and fellow supporters that it’s improved again and urge them to become regular purchasers either by subscription or through one of the clubs or shops ?"
